Management Team

Yuchen Zhou

Founder and Chief Commercial Officer

Dr. Zhou is founder of the Applied Cell and inventor of MARS technology. Dr. Zhou’s more than 17 years professional experience spanned advanced device design and research, commercial product development, and global business operation. Dr. Zhou authored more than 200 inventions. He has more than 30 publications in academic journals and international conferences. Dr. Zhou received his  Ph. D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. 

Liping Yu

VP of Applications

Liping leads application development, which integrates reagent, software and system to provide customers total solutions. Liping obtained her PhD in Biophysics from Carnegie Mellon University and took her postdoc training at Beckton Dickinson. She has worked in the biotech industry for over 12 years where she led innovation projects and managed collaborations. Liping’s technical expertise is in cell analysis, cell separation and analytical tools. Outside work she likes cooking and hiking.

Silin Sa

Director of Applications

Silin supervises system verification and assay development. She obtained her PhD in 2013 in stem cell bioengineering, which was followed by postdoctoral training at Stanford University from 2013 to 2016. She has expertise in system verification and validation, cellular assays development, flow cytometry and cell sorting.   

Chris Hammerquist

Director of Sales North America

High energy, strategic minded commercial leader. Chris combines a strong background in Clinical Diagnostics, Biotech, and the Pharmaceutical industry. Chris received his BS in Biology from Rowan University and completed his certification for “Strategic Business Planning” from Wharton School of Business. Chris served in the United States Navy as an Operation Specialist, and has held various leadership positions with Roche Diagnostics, Neta Scientific and Miltenyi Biotech.  

Kat Ginda-Mäkelä

Director of Commercial Operations

Kat is managing global commercial activities and supervising marketing, product management and working with our commercial partners. She obtained her PhD in 2012 in molecular microbiology, which was followed by Postdoctoral training and MBA studies. She has been involved in the commercialization of multiple projects working with startups in Poland, UK and USA. Kat enjoys hiking, cooking and a good read.  

Helen Zhou

Operation Manager & Sr Scientist

Helen coordinates with commercial operations and the sales departments to meet production goals and helps improve production performance in application projects. Helen also plans and organizes daily activities related to production and operations. Helen obtained her MD and MS degrees in 1999. She has expertise in managing the core facility, designing the cancer research project, and developing cell culture-related assays and products.  

Bing Yen

Senior Director Patent Execution

Bing manages MEMS foundry operation and oversees patent prosecution, quality and regulatory affairs.

Applied Cells, Inc., was founded to create revolutionary solution to complete the workflow of cell separation and enrichment products, which increase cell separation efficiently by fundamentally changing how physics is employed in the process. We are helping in battles against cancer by providing tools that are not only capable of isolating rarest cancer cells, but also capable of extracting highest quality immune cells to achieve better cell therapy outcome.
